Siad Barre took power in Somalia in the night of 21st Oct 1969 in a bloodless military coup. He ruled for 21 years. Since January 1991, Somalia has been suffering from violence, Islamic extremism, disintegration, sea piracy, terrorism and widespread lawlessness. Is this because of his legacy or the lack of a leader as strong as he once was?
